I’ve been thinking about this theme non-stop since I saw the David Hockney expo in Paris a couple weeks ago. And I happened to take a photo of one of Rauschenberg’s collages in Madrid last weekend. Thanks for writing this, I’m looking forward to diving deeper into the other artists you mentioned.
Wonderful article! It’s interesting to see the overlap in the work of these artists. I’m always fascinated by artists that can seemingly “do it all”. It’s really a matter of self expression, no matter what the medium. Who was it that said that “every photograph is a self portrait?” Looking at your examples, that’s very evident to see, not only in each artist’s photographs but in their paintings as well.

It’s human nature to want to categorize and organize, so when we look at an artist we tend to want to lump them into a specific medium, but the reality is most of us work cross disciplinary through out our careers. A great example is Alexander Calder. Most people think sculpture and mobiles, but he also painted, designed jewelry, tapestries, stage sets, took photographs, worked in lithography, made drawings and more. Yes he’s famous for his mobiles and sculptures, but he worked so many different mediums perusing his creative voice. There are thousands upon thousands of artists that take photos with artistic intent as well as create in other mediums with the same artistic intent in order to release their vision into the world. It’s a deep topic that you could write a lengthy book on.
Cool. You have touched on something really interesting. I do find that those who do both do one a lot better than the other, except maybe for Saul Leiter. I wish HCB had stuck with photography. I cannot think of anything nice to say about his drawings, other than 'he tried'.
Very interesting post, thanks!
This is great! As artists we are all to a degree ambidextrous with our creative skills. I was going to do a piece on photographers and musicians!
